Some days ago a female client, 50 years old, asked for a consultation, because she wanted to start a new career as an independent writer. Is it too late? Am I too old? She was really concerned. And I understood her concern in our time of propagated youth, sexiness and success everywhere.
Look at me, I answered; it is never too late to start something new. It is only now that I begin to go on stage presenting my work so that I can inspire young and old.
And it is not only I doing new things later in life. I can give you many examples of people, men and women, who changed career at a later age and had their life success or rose to their highest performance.
Look at Colonel Sanders, you know him well. Your young children want to eat fried chicken and you disagree. ☺
Well, he was over 60 when he had his success with Kentucky Fried Chicken. At that age he had the courage to change from being a chicken seller at a service station to starting his own business.
Or think of ‘Angela’s Ashes’, one of the books made into a film. The author of the book is Frank McCourt’s who received both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Books Critics Circle Award. Frank McCourt only started to write when he was 65. Imagine this: a museum is named after him.
Another example is Peter Roget. We all use a Thesaurus. It was he who invented the first thesaurus at the age of 73.
Do you want to hear more? I asked, and she nodded.
There is Kathryn Joosten, who worked as a nurse in the 1960s and ‘70s. Only after her divorce, as a single mother did she pursue her childhood dream of becoming an actress. And she became one.
Or in the world of sports: The world oldest marathon runner, Fauja Singh is 100 years old. We see Yoga teachers at the age of 80, black belt karate performer at the age of 80 and even 90.
Let’s look at the arts: Carmen Herrera (94 today) sold her first work in 2004. And Georgia O’Keeffe still painted successfully until her death at the age of 98.
How do they do it? My client asked.
What they have in common is passion, a common sense and perseverance. They do not give in to social or personal judgments. They do what they love doing.
Well, I think, indeed, it is never too late. ☺
